6th Annual Red Wasp Film Festival
Brazos Progressives Announces the Winners of the 6th Annual Red Wasp Film Festival at StageCenter
BRYAN, TX--On Friday and Saturday, October 24 ad 25, 2008, Brazos Progressives presented the 6th Annual Film Festival at StageCenter Theater in downtown Bryan. The following awards were presented on Saturday night:
- Red Wasp Best Film: "Dirty Girl" by Jennifer Clary and Kevin Haberer.
- One to Watch: "Violet" by Bernard Garceau III.
- Audience Favorite: "4th and Long" by Timothy Vandenberg.
- Most Entertaining Film: "Mock Date" by Julio Olivera.
Artist Theodora Saladino Krc created the "Red Wasp Best Film" trophy presented to Jennifer Clary and Kevin Haberer, and downtown restaurants Square One and Caffe Capri donated bottles of wine and gift certificates for the other prizes. The festival, which was attended by almost 200 people, screened eleven films that were entered in a competition for festival prizes, as well as the highly acclaimed film "Whaledreamers," directed by Kim Kindersley, produced by Julian Lennon, and distributed by Monterey Media.
Carol and Craig Conlee started the Red Wasp Film Festival in 2003 at the 7F Lodge in Wellborn. After battling the red wasps at 7F Lodge, Carol decided to make peace with the insects by naming the independent film festival after them, thus transforming the familiar insect into the festival's namesake. In 2006, Brazos Progressives began helping the Conlees organize the Red Wasp Film Festival so that the festival could continue after they moved to Mason, TX. That same year, the festival moved to Conlee Auctions in downtown Bryan, where it was held for two years. This year marks the first year that the festival was held at StageCenter, giving the festival more visibility at a centralized downtown location.
The Red Wasp Film Festival was made possible in part by funding provided through the Arts Council of Brazos Valley and the Arts-Business Consortium, partnering business and the arts in our community. Additional sponsors include Revolution; Texas State Optical of Bryan, G.D. Phillips, O.D.; Stearns Design-Build; Caffe Capri; As You Wish; Web Unlimited; Downtown Cartel; The Internal Medicine Center, Elizabeth C. Berigan, M.D.; All Things Spiritual, Teri A. Massengale, M-Div.; Brazos Natural Foods; Square One Bistro; Madden's Casual Gourmet; Downtown Bryan Economic Development Association (DBEDA); Jenn Atkins, Certified Nutritional Consultant; KEOS; and Third Eye Productions.
Brazos Progressives looks forward to future film festivals, as the organization continues to promote art and independent film as an integral part our community. For a complete list of films screened at this year's Red Wasp Film festival, visit the web site.
